The Young and The Restless: Y&R Fashion Tips – White Pants Done Right
Posted by The Y and R Lady - 12/06/09 at 11:06 pmOk All,
This is a touchy subject so I referred to a very good friend and expert stylist who has been in the Fashion Industry for at least 12 years. Take it away Rita! Also thank you for your help! Maybe if we all leave her a thank you note, she’ll come back again soon!
It’s summer and it’s time to pull out the WHITE PANTS!! I know what
you’re thinking. “White on the bottom makes me look heavy.” My response:
A fashionable, well dressed woman looks good, no matter what color she
wears. But here’s the problem: so many women make white pants look bad,
making themselves look heavy and declasse. The trick to picking a pair of
white pants is the same as choosing any other pants: Fit, Fabric and
Underwear.
First is fit. For goodness sake ladies, do not wear your white pants too
tight! Be sure to flatter your shape: not every pair of pants will suit
your body type. If you are short, either choose a pant that is a regular
length or go for pedal pusher (knee length) pants. Crop or capri pants
will make you look even shorter. If you are self conscious about your
hips, choose wide leg, boot cut or any pant that flows away from the body
from the hip down. Pants that fit tight on your hips and thighs will
highlight your problem area. If you carry your weight in your tummy
choose a rise that hits just below your belly button. Low rise pants will
make you look pregnant and high rise pants will make you look geriatric.
Next is fabric. White can be light and airy or sheer and unflattering.
Choose a fabric that has a good weight. If the pants are made out of the
same material that your tee shirt is (cotton jersey), leave them in the
store. Nobody wants to look at your tattoo or appendix scar through your
clothing. Linen pants are very hot for the summer. Also a stretch cotton
blend, bit heavier than your average button-down shirt, is suitable. White
denim is pretty cute too (please see notes on “fit”).
Lastly, it is important to choose the right underwear. As you know
printed under garments are a no-no. No lace either, just like prints it
can be seen underneath your white pants. Also white panties under white
pants just emphasize the panty line. The rule is to choose underwear
close to your skin color. Only wear black panties if your skin is dark
enough to hide the lines. Thongs are okay but before you leave, check out
your butt to make sure that there is no thong visibility. Boy shorts are
the best for invisible lines.
So there you have it! Fit, Fabric and Underwear. You have the tools. Now
go find the best white pants for you and wear them with pride.
